7 Infertility treatment procedures explained

Infertility treatment depends on the cause of infertility, the duration for which you have been infertile, the couple’s ages and personal preferences. Infertility treatment could involve significant physical, psychological, financial and time commitments. Hence, it is advisable to visit a reputed infertility services centre.

Infertility treatments for men

Infertility treatment for men may be given for general sexual problems or lack of healthy sperm. Treatment procedures include:

Lifestyle alteration–Modifying lifestyle and behavioral factors such as discontinuing certain medication, reducing/eliminating harmful substances, improving timing and frequency of sexual intercourse, following an exercise routine can help improve chances for pregnancy.

Medication – Certain medications hep increase testicular function including sperm quality and production thus improving sperm count and the chances of achieving a successful pregnancy.

Surgery – In few situations, surgery could reverse a sperm blockage and restore fertility. In other cases, repairing a varicocele surgically could improve the chances of a successful pregnancy.

Infertility treatments for women

Though women may need just one or two therapies to restore fertility, they many need several treatments before they can successfully conceive. Some procedures include:

Fertility drugs–This type of treatment is prescribed mainly for women who are infertile due to ovulation disorders. These medications induce or regulate ovulation.

Intrauterine insemination (IUI)–In this procedure, healthy sperm are placed in the uterus directly around the time the woman’s ovary releases one or more eggs for fertilization. Depending on the reason of the infertility, the IUI timing is coordinated with the woman’s normal cycle or fertility medications.

Surgery – Uterine problems such as a uterine septum, intrauterine scar tissue or endometrial polyps can be treated by hysteroscopic surgery.

Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART)

In cases where the cause of infertility prevents the egg and sperm from uniting and other treatments have failed, your doctor may recommend a high-tech procedure wherein the eggs or embryos and sperm are handled outside the body. The most popular ART technique in in-vitro fertilisation (IVF). Some IVF procedures use a special fertilization technique called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). In select cases, zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT) or gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) can help in having a successful pregnancy. Depending on your age or ovary function you may have to use an egg donor. Similarly, if there’s a problem with your uterus or if pregnancy could be life-threatening, you may consider using a surrogate or gestational carrier.

These are some of the commonly used infertility treatments in India. If you and your partner have been unsuccessful at getting pregnant for over a year, it is recommended that you visit a reputed infertility services centre; most infertility issues are treatable.
